If you’re an avid coffee-drinker, you know how easily this delightful beverage can turn your pearly whites yellow. Maybe you’ve even whitened your teeth a time or two. It’s true that porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, making them an effective discoloration deterrent. However, that doesn’t mean you and your favorite latte are in the clear. Keep reading to learn more about porcelain veneers and how you can maintain their pristine appearance.

Do Porcelain Veneers Stain or Not?

This dental cosmetic treatment is definitely stain-resistant. Porcelain is well-known in dentistry and architecture for being nonporous and durable. Pigments take longer to settle deep into the material, meaning cleaning away grime is a simple matter of promptly wiping down the surface. It’s not stain-proof, though. Wear and tear and poor oral hygiene will make it easier for surface yellowing to become a deep-set stain.

Does That Mean Sacrificing Coffee for Appealing Veneers?

Not necessarily! Far be it from anyone to ban you from the dopamine and health benefits associated with coffee. Limiting, not quitting, your intake is one way to ensure pearlescent porcelain veneers. If the season has you craving a cup of pumpkin spice every day, though, you’re going to need more help protecting your dental cosmetics from discoloration. Remember to do these things:

  • Brush twice daily and floss once per day
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water after every meal
  • Drink your coffee through a straw to limit direct contact
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid excessive wear
  • Avoid teeth-grinding that could damage your veneers and open pours
  • Visit your dentist every six months for a professional cleaning

You’d be surprised how a little oral hygiene and mindfulness can greatly extend the aesthetic lifespan of your veneers!

What If My Porcelain Veneers are Already Stained?

Fortunately, stains are removable, with some effort. Your dentist might be able to simply clean away discoloration with their professional-grade tools. Polishing can also be effective. However, truly intrinsic pigments are a different story. Porcelain veneers that can’t be brightened will have to be replaced entirely. So don’t slack on stain prevention just because your dentist might be able to reverse the effects!

At the end of the day, if you’re worried about the appearance of your porcelain veneers, it’s best to consult with your dentist. After getting an idea of what your coffee-drinking and oral hygiene habits are like, they can give you personalized suggestions for maintaining their shine.
